Guess who finally went to Modern Times? THIS GIRL.
Situated in the industrial area of Sports Arena / Point Loma is this incredible 2,000 square foot tasting room. This location is called their Lomaland Fermentorium and it is really, really, really, really cool. Really. Modern Times, if you’ve been living under a rock, is a beloved San Diego based brewery. They have two San Diego tasting rooms; one in Point Loma and the other in North Park. Both locations are uber-hip and a hot spot for all craft beer lovers.
It’s obvious that Modern Times puts a lot of effort into all aspects of their business. Their beers are incredibly good, the coffee is out of this world, their modern-retro branding is so cool, and the tasting room is decorated like a Instragrammer’s dream.
Every aspect of the building has something creative and artistic that is worthy of a snap. One wall is covered in a Post-It mural of Michael Jackson holding a monkey. The other wall is covered in comic book pages. Their bar is wrapped by a solid wall of very cool hardcover books. Add hanging lights, two tumbleweed chandeliers, an industrial roll up window, and oil barrel tables, and you’ll find yourself being stared at for being the weirdo taking pictures of everything.
One of the very cool things about the Lomaland Fermentorium is their coffee bar which is separate from their beer bar. The selection of caffeine is impressive, latte choices are vegan (I went with almond milk), and they had a very nice display of pastries to choose from. Of course, we had to try the chocolate and peanut butter option.
Our barista was absolutely delightful and let me sample a fascinating spicy Aztec concoction she was playing around with. If you like their coffee, you can buy bags of whole beans from the little merch store on site. We were already Modern Times coffee drinkers and we usually buy it at Whole Foods, but I picked up another bag while we were here. Their Heavy Weather Winter Blend IS MY FAVORITE THING IN THE WHOLE WORLD and I don’t care that it’s $16 a bag. If you want to smell what love smells like, just buy Heavy Weather.
We mainly came for the coffee, but Mr. San Diego imbibed on a pint of Blazing World and I had a taster of Fruitlands. I’m a lightweight – taster size is the only size I ever drink. Don't judge me - I don't drink often! We had a great time here and I definitely look forward to going back again!
