Halloween "Hand" Pies
It is finally October! This is my favorite time of year and I love, love, love Halloween! To kick off Spooky Season, I thought I’d start with something REALLY, REALLY easy. Behold, hand pies in the shape of hands! Get it?! HAND pies!
These are the easiest to make because all you need are four ingredients!
Pie Crust - the refrigerated kind that you roll out.
Pie Filling - I chose strawberry but cherry would look “bloodier”. I just don’t like cherry filling or cherry pies.
One Egg - for the egg wash to seal the two layers.
Water - just a dash to mix in with the egg for an egg wash!
You could make your own filling and pie dough if you wanted to…but really, the pre-made ingredients are so cheap and make it so quick and easy.
assembly steps
To begin, all you need to do is roll out your cold pre-made dough and CAREFULLY trace around your hand with a knife. Make sure you leave a good amount of space between the knife and your fingers. If the fingers are too skinny/narrow, you won’t be able to fill and seal them properly. I had to keep the knife about a half-inch away from my skin. Mind you, I have smaller hands…so if you have larger hands, just use your own judgement.
After you cut out one of your hands, stack it on top of the remaining dough and use the knife to trace around your pre-cut hand to make a second identical layer.
Use an egg wash around the edges of the bottom layer and use your pie filling to fill the center of the palm and the middle of the fingers, then cover it with the second hand cutout. I used a fork to seal the edges because it wanted a “stitched together” look, but you can use whatever you want to seal them. I cut an “x” on the top to allow them to vent and Mr. San Diego thought it gave them a stigmata kind of look. Ha! Use your egg wash to coat the tops and pop them in the oven.
I followed the temperature guidelines on the pie dough box and just kept an eye on them in the oven until they looked done! Took about 20 minutes at 400 degrees for mine.
That’s it! SO EASY, not super messy, and didn’t require a ton of money for ingredients.
The only change I might make would be to top them with sugar before baking since the dough isn’t very sweet. However, I liked the look of them without the sugar since it kind of had a dry-skin effect with the egg wash.
