Maui | Punakea Palms Coconut Farm

Coconut trees are a significant part of the iconic Hawaiian imagery, but did you know there is only ONE coconut farm anywhere on the islands? ONE.

I learned a ton of fascinating facts during my tour at Punakea Palms Coconut Farm, the small but gorgeous family-operated farm in West Maui. It is a short drive from the resort area in Lahaina and well worth the visit.

Cutest Shop & Cafe

Right as you pull into the parking lot, you’re greeted by the CUTEST open-air cafe and shop.

It is an Instagram DREAMMMM

The cafe offers fresh coconuts, iced coffee with coconut sugar (if you want it sweetened), and the most delicious sugar cane juice you’ll ever have in your life. Seriously, you MUST try it. Although the farm and cafe are small, it is adorably quaint and overlooks the coconut trees with a gorgeous view.

The cafe awning is covered by palm leaves, which only adds to the dreamy tropical paradise vibe.

A Different Type of Tour

Tours at Punakea Palms are not like the grand-scale pineapple tours on the island. It’s so much more.

It’s an eco-conscious Passion Project

Our guide, Jeremy, was incredibly knowable and did a great job explaining why coconuts are not commercially produced on the island. His enthusiasm for eco-conscious and natural farming techniques, as well as the many uses of coconuts, really shone through.

The mission on the farm is clear, and it makes the price of the tour feel like it is supporting something special.

Not Much Walking but Lots of Eating

There isn’t much walking, but there is a lot of learning and coconut drinking and eating.

  • Tours are small and ours was limited to 6 people. I think is a post-covid change, as the website states 10.

  • Price: $55 for adults and $40 for children, plus fees and taxes.

  • You’re provided with your own bamboo straw to drink out of a freshly opened coconut.

Don’t Like Coconut? You Might After This

Even if you’re not a fan of coconut (like my husband Mr. San Diego), you will still enjoy tasting coconut water at different stages of a coconut’s life cycle. They are absolutely delicious, and I wanted to drink from them all day long.

The only thing that bummed me out was not making our own coconut milk, which I had seen online and looked forward to. I’m not sure if we ran out of time, or if they took that off the tour due to the pandemic, but I forgot to ask. We were taught the steps for making coconut milk but did not make any.

Regardless, it was still a super awesome tour at a BEAUTIFUL farm with a fantastic message.

The. Friggin’. OVERLOOK!

Right off the coconut tree path is a STUNNING overlook that nearly took my breath away. You can’t see it when you’re on the tour, but all it takes is a few steps and then this incredible surprise is right in front of you. It is a perfect setup for a small wedding or event. If I ever visit this farm again, I’ll make sure to bring a picnic blanket so I can relax and enjoy the view while sipping from a coconut.

it’s Worth The Visit

Visiting Punakea Palms was a great way to spend an hour or two in Lahaina. It is a unique experience on a beautiful boutique-style farm that makes you wish you lived and worked there. All I wanted to do is swing a machete and chop open a coconut like a local.
