Tacos El Gordo | San Diego
I really, REALLY love tacos and I think I may have found the best street-style taco in all of San Diego at Tacos El Gordo.
Tacos El Gordo in Chula Vista has a line forming before they even open their doors at 10am. There are no gimmicks, nothing hip and Instagram worthy - they just have Tijuana style street tacos that they do incredibly well.
When you walk into the establishment, you're met with a few different lines to choose from. Each line is for one type of taco. They have everything from lengua and tripa, to carne asada and their most popular...adobada.
Without a doubt, the adobada taco is their shining star. Words cannot describe how absolutely delicious this taco is. The adobada is sliced off a spinning grill, straight into your taco, and the toppings are added. Mr. San Diego and I have gone together a few times and we have tried most of the items on the menu, but the one that we keep going back to is the adobada.
There are two locations in San Diego. One is in Chula Vista off H Street, and the other is in National City off Palm Avenue. They have a few locations in Las Vegas too! As mentioned earlier, we went to the Chula Vista location and we strategically arrived a few minutes before they opened to beat the rush because this place gets busy FAST. If you go around dinner time, you'll need someone to go with you and a strategy to get the tacos you want. The lines get very long and you can only select one style taco from each line.
I'm not sure how I've spent years in San Diego and have only recently discovered this place. If you're looking for authentic, no gimmick street-style tacos - well, this is THE place to go.
