Let me start by saying that I tried to like this book, I really did…honest. It had so much potential for being an incredible read for me because the subject matter is so important and something I enjoy learning more about. Usually, anything that tackles and discusses the honest and uncomfortable nature of race, gender, class, privilege, etc. are immediately engrossing to me.
However, this book kept putting me to sleep. I was really excited to see how Kiley Reid would tackle the problems faced by her main characters but it was soooo slow for me! I kept trying to go back and finish the book, but after the traumatic start, it turned into a style of novel that I just don’t enjoy - the modern-girl with modern-problems with awkward comedy that isn’t really practical sometimes (specifically towards Alix). Kind of like Sophie Kinsella or Jasmine Guillory’s style of novel…it’s just not the kind of writing or dialogue that captures my attention. It would throw in really important bits and then go back to a stretch of standard woes that put me to sleep. I know it’s completely unfair of me to judge this book this way because it really does cover an array of important subject matter, but I really struggled to keep turning the page. So, I stopped and just read a few full reviews.
Here is an amazing review about the book that I read that is worth sharing: https://www.vox.com/culture/2020/1/8/21055681/such-a-fun-age-kiley-reid-review. They rave about this book and I can see why based on their analysis. Seriously, it’s such a good explanation.
